BERLIN (AFP) -- Former world heavyweight champion Nikolai Valuev, ""the Beast from the East"", can win back the WBA title he lost to Ruslan Chagaev in next year's rematch, the Russian's new coach insisted on Sunday.
The seven foot Russian, who weighs in at over 145kg, has his first fight since he lost his title to Chagaev in April when he takes on Canadian Jean-Francois Bergeron at Berlin's Max-Schmeling Halle on September 29.The 34-year-old Valuev parted company with longtime coach Manuel Gabrielian over the summer with 59-year-old Russian Alexander Zimin taking over as his trainer, but the Russian insists his fighter can be world champ again.
""Chagaev can be beaten, definitely,"" said Zimin who was in Berlin with Valuev for a training session.
""He has physical disadvantages. He is a southpaw, meaning it will be crucial to have the better game plan.
""You have to put your opponent in a position where you can hit him. Nikolai did pretty much the opposite in the first fight, but it will not happen in the rematch.
""Nikolai was the world champion. We want to win the title back, obviously, but it is not just the titles I am looking at.
""I want him to improve as a boxer, to move more, land more punches and behave better tactically.""
Zimin says Valuev made some huge tactical mistakes in his majority decision defeat to Chagaev on April 14 and will not let his fighter make the same errors again.
""He just did not do a lot of the things he should have done.
""He fought tactically wrong. The defeat was pretty much unnecessary.
""Chagaev did well and was very ambitious, but he did not fight brilliantly. Nikolai lost this fight because of tactics.""
Valuev's next opponent, 34-year-old Bergeron, is unbeaten with 27 wins and 19 knockouts since he turned professional in 1995
